The program expanded and changed its name to Team Albany Educational Basketball Program in 2005. The program now serves 80 - 100 kids both male and female youth ages 8 - 19 years old in the capital region area. The Educational component serves to develop the student athlete academically and prepare them for college. The Team Albany Educational and athletic program runs full force all year round from September - August, students are offered academic and career support and given the opportunity to participate in the community services to prepare them for college. Volunteers use this time to assist the students and plan for the up coming school year.
The purpose of the program is to encourage excellence in sports as a way of encouraging and advancing excellence in academics, developing constructive personal goals, achieving sound moral standards and providing an extended family to assist young people in becoming valuable contributors of their community.
To offer amateur sports programs through a volunteer base for all people to have the physical, mental and moral development of amateur athletics and promote good sportsmanship and good citizenship.
To offer amatuer athletics and volunteer Oppourtunities to develop to their highest level through national and local networking of sporting events. Through participation in AAU, we achieve our dreams as athletes and as valued citizens of our communities.
Wherever possible, the Team Albany/Brooklyn provides support systems necessary for their players to stay in school. Students who receive failing grades are taken out of play and Team Albany/Brooklyn work with the schools and other city programs to arrange tutorial help. An on-site tutoring program is in the planning stages and on a limited basis, tutoring by Team Albany/Brooklyn volunteers is currently available at the gym.
Often a youngster's difficulties at school or in the gym are indicative of a larger family problem. Team Albany/Brooklyn staff can do what they can to address a family's real needs. If a youngster needs advice he gets it; if he needs shoes, he gets them; if his family needs help in charting a course through the maze of city agencies, we refer them and give them guidance. The Team Albany/Brooklyn staff have gone to court, raised bail, and otherwise served as the youngsters' advocates and champions during especially distressing periods in their lives. The staff members are the middle ground. They are there to help the youngster through the teenage peer pressure.
Team Albany/Brooklyn staff provides kids with counseling on selecting area high schools, SAT preparation classes, colleges and junior colleges and other programs and services. Staff interest in Team Albany/Brooklyn players does not end with high school or even college graduation. Graduates who go away to school are in frequent contact with staff for advice and encouragement. From time to time, staff travels to visit them at school, providing a friendly contact from home. The youngster really likes getting the visit because it means someone really cares and has a true interest in their success.
